Bethel Heights 2015 Estate Pinot Noir “Casteel”
Patricia Green Cellars 2010 Estate Old Vine Pinot Noir
The Wine: Red-fruited and brimming with a marine and mineral character. Terrific tension and nerviness to it with deftly splayed tannins throughout the wine giving a distinct feeling of brightness and freshness to the palate. 13% Alc.
The Winery: Patricia Green Cellars is located in the Ribbon Ridge Appellation of the Willamette Valley on an estate purchased by 2000 by Patty Green and Jim Anderson. The winery is noted for producing a broad selection of vineyard designated Pinot Noirs. In terms of winemaking, things are done as simply as possible. Patricia Green Cellars uses a collaborative approach to running the business from nearly all perspectives, a dedication to particular sites being able to produce uniquely special Pinot Noirs and a willingness to continually evolve, adapt and grow as a winery, winemakers and winery owners.
Scar of the Sea 2014 Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir “Block 45”
The Wine: A nuanced Pinot Noir with layers of red berry fruit, herbaceousness and a distinct smoky character. Fruit was 70% destemmed and fermented with native yeasts before aging for 16 months before bottling. 13.5% Alc.
The Winery: Scar of the Sea was established in 2012 and is owned & operated by Mikey and Gina Giugni in San Luis Obispo, California. They source fruit from environmentally conscientious growers at top-quality vineyard sites that are influenced by the sea with maritime soils and climates in the Central Coast of California, while making wines with as little intervention as possible.
Bethel Heights 2015 Estate Pinot Noir “Casteel”
The Wine: This Pinot has aromas of black cherry, pine resin and black currants with hints of cooking chocolate and cinnamon lingering in the background. Flavors of black berries and dark chocolate play over a sinewy, taut structure of mineral laden acidity and fine-grained tannins. Energetic and focused to support and carry the fruit long into the future. Wine was destemmed without crushing and after fermentation was left to age 16 months before bottling. 13.7% Alc.
The Winery: The first vintage of Bethel Heights came in 1984, seven years after they had acquired the land, and it consisted of all estate-grown wine. Located in Salem, Oregon, Bethel Heights has worked with fellow winemaking pioneers over the years to establish the Willamette Valley as the home of New World Pinot Noir. Now led by a new generation, the winery’s goal is still the same: to grow their grapes and make their wine without diminishing the flourishing ecosystem that was in place when they first became custodians of the land 45 years ago. They are LIVE Certified, have farmed without herbicides since 2009, and have joined forces with their neighbors and colleagues in collaborative efforts to promote sustainability in the landscape.
