The wine is clean and mineral, fresh and citrusy with aromas of pear and a hint of chalkiness. On the palate, expect flavors of pineapple and stone fruit. This is not a buttery Chardonnay.
Fruit was picked early to maintain natural acidity, at the winery it went direct to press and the juice was barrel fermented using only native yeasts. The wine aged in neutral French oak barrels for 6 months and went through full malolactic fermentation.
Wheeler Vineyard Chardonnay, located at Tres Pinos, was planted in 1977 on elevated gravelly alluvial terrace. Kevin Olson Vineyard, planted in 1999, is one of the coldest vineyards in California and is located right off Highway 101 in Prunedale and grows in sandy soils. Both vineyards are organically farmed.
