A dark-fruited Syrah with concentrated depth and crisp acidity with a peppery finish.

Variety: 100% Syrah
Vineyard: Sunhawk Farms
Location: Mendocino County, CA
Alcohol: 11.5%
Production: 106 cases

Concentrated depth, flowing with notes of dark fruit and berries, crisp acidity and a peppery finish. Matte tannins and a little funky.

Fruit underwent carbonic maceration for two weeks and was then foot crushed. The fruit received daily pumpovers during primary fermentation, followed by 4 weeks of extended maceration, for a total of 8 weeks on the skins. The fruit was then pressed and the wine was raised in mixed neutral oak barrels and puncheons for 10 months. The wine is racked to tank for blending 4 weeks prior to bottling. As always unfined, unfiltered, and zero sulfur.

The eight acres of grapevines found at Sunhawk Farms were planted twenty years ago by John Schaeffer, a pioneer of natural products and solar energy, who bought the 300-acre property and built an ideal retreat up the mountain next to Duncan Springs Peak. John’s Demeter-certified vineyard includes a 17th century inspired lavender labyrinth at the top of the vineyard, a 2500 tree olive orchard and 4 blocks of mixed (predominantly Rhône) varieties planted on volcanic and serpentine soils. John and foreman Manuel Nunez are committed to developing and maintaining a biodynamic and self-sustaining ecosystem. Vines are treated with herbs, minerals and manure, much of which is sourced from the property itself.
